Having a website is more than just a box to check off your list

Whether you are a new business or an established business with a website that is ::check:: – done and marked off your list, I’m here to tell you that if you don’t build your website in a way that it actually works for your business: it won’t.

When I work with clients, one of the first questions I ask is “What should your website do?”

This typically results in a few follow up questions, like:

Do you want to have potential clients contact you through your website?

Do you want to sell anything, now or in the future?

Do you want to collect email addresses for a newsletter?

These are all examples of pretty straightforward ways a website can actually work for you. Whether you are hoping to get leads, sell something (a product or a service!) or build your audience on a platform you actually own (that isn’t social media), your website has a job.

How do you make your website work for you?

Firstly, it really comes down to the primary goal of your business. For service providers, this can look like building a website to showcase your service, tell your unique story and the problems you solve, and call your audience to take action – like booking a consultation call.

Here are a couple examples that I’m currently working on:

Client A: Interior Designer

Client A is working to level up her business and refine her online presence. We worked through renaming her business and a new brand identity to support her vision. The website strategy we are building has a story-telling foundation that showcases her best work, as well as case studies to talk through the challenges and problems she is solving for her clients.

Her main goal is to book consultations through her website, so we are creating a strong foundation for user experience, functionality, messaging, and a story that calls her audience to take the action of booking.

We will measure results with analytics and a conversion rate we can directly tie to bookings completed on her website, telling us how effective our efforts are, letting us know her website is actively working for her.

Client B: Photographer

Client B has a strong reputation in her niche, but has recently found competition creeping in on her leads. With a solid brand identity already in place, we are working through a website strategy that incorporates SEO that targets the audience she wants to find her in their online searches for her service. The strategy work is rooted in lead generation, telling her story through compelling writing throughout her website, a refreshed blog, and images.

Her main goal is to show up in searches and reclaim her niche as the go-to photographer in her area. We are doing this by building her website with specific SEO and trackable keywords throughout her site and blog.

We will measure results with properly setup analytics, letting us know how effectively we are reaching her target audience, as well as a conversion rate tied to her bookings so that we know how well her website is actually working for her.

Let the data do the talking

My approach to building websites incorporates a way to track our efforts. Afterall, if you can’t measure something, how will you know it’s even working? When we build your website with a clear goal, tracking mechanisms, and analytics to show for it – you’re being set up to succeed with the power of information.
