5 Things to Review on Your Website Every Year
It’s a great practice to take a look at your website every so often to be sure your functionality is intact and all your information is up to date. We’ll sometimes go in and make the occasional update from time to time, but often the smaller details get overlooked. Some of these might be more obvious than others, but you might be surprised how often the bigger points can still fall through the cracks.
The first of the year is a great time to take a little comb through your site to check these five things:
1. Are your services or products current, or have you added anything new?
This might be more obvious, but take a quick look through to be sure everything is portrayed accurately and actually speaks to your audience. If you have added something new “really quick” in the moment just to get it online, the messaging might have a different flow than your other offers or products, or the formatting on the page might be inconsistent with other pages or your overall look and feel.
Taking another look at messaging, consistency, and how thoroughly you explain your services is essential when reviewing your site.
2. Do you include pricing on your website, or has anything changed since your last update?
Depending on your stage of business and the clients or customers you want to attract, you may or may not include pricing on your website. Have you grown to attract more higher-end clients where it’s not common to show pricing in your industry? Be sure to remove it. Have you increased your rates to keep up with the cost of living? Double-check your numbers to be sure you’re still keeping up.
Regularly evaluating your pricing is important for keeping your business profitable.
3. Have you updated the copyright year on your website footer?
There is conflicting advice on whether to show the full range of years your website has been live, or just the current year. I’m in the second camp, but do your own research to see which format works best for your business.
Just be sure this is current and up to date!
4. Have you looked at your Website Terms & Conditions and Privacy Policy since you launched your website?
Or, do you even have them at all? There are very few instances where these policies are not required, and I recommend all my clients have them. These also have dates, so if you have added something new, like a digital product that you didn’t have when you purchased these policies, you’ll want to update them to reflect how your business is running today–and update the date.
I partner with The Legal Paige to offer the Website Terms & Conditions + Privacy Policy bundle to all of my clients, and it’s one of the easiest ways to put real legal guardrails around your site.
Legal protection does not work retroactively. You need these even if you only collect email addresses or use analytics!
5. Have you spellchecked your entire site?
Whether you copy/paste into a Google doc or use AI: nothing will dash your credibility faster than a glaring typo. Please run a spell check on your entire site and correct any typos immediately.
This is an easy one. 🙂
If going through this short list has given you some motivation to make a few updates, I love that! If you need a little help to get these off your task list, I’m here for you and can help with your Squarespace or Shopify website in a couple of different ways:
If you have a list of updates you can’t seem to get to (even if you technically can do them yourself, you’re just putting them off), I can tackle these with a Studio Session. It’s as simple as booking a session and handing over your list.
